Blue whales live in oceans all over the world.
The world contains 9 seperate blue whale populations. The closest to Chico is the Eastern North Pacific blue whale population (Loma). They are counted in population by separating ocean basin in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Southern Hemisphere. They are found in colder temperature waters and deeper waters. Blue whales dwell in sub-polar to sub-tropical latitudes. Their migration patterns in the spring allow them to take advantage of fresh food supply in the summer. During the fall they begin heading to the sub-tropics, which allow them to reduce their energy, which is especially important because blue whales fast during this time. They also stay clear of areas in the ocean with a lot of ice. Blue whales primarily reproduce while in warmer waters which are in the waters of the lower-latitudes (Rhoades). There are about 2,000 blue whales that live off the coast of California. They migrate to the warmer climate of Mexico and Costa Rica for the winter.
